Two Gardening and Landscaping students from Wellantcollege, Lucas Muilwijk and Mario Nederlof, have delivered an excellent performance at the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia. They returned home with an amazing experience and a Medal of Excellence.
The two students had previously won the Dutch student championships in Landscaping and were therefore allowed to participate at the WorldSkills 2019.
Both boys achieved 706 points and scored 11th place during the international professional competition for VET students. 24 teams participated in the Landscape Gardening section.
A total of 1350 candidates from 63 countries took part in WorldSkills 2019 in 56 professional competitions. Switzerland scooped the gold medal. Silver was for South Tyrol (Italy) and the bronze medal for Colombia.
In a mere 4 days Lucas and Mario had to make a garden that consisted of a kind of amphitheater with partly paving and further planting and a few planters, all with steel edges. There were also a pond, a water basin with a waterfall, a three-part wooden bridge and of course a lot of plants. In addition there were also two bins against a wall, which resulted in a vertical garden.
Lucas and Mario showed a lot of commitment, quality and craftsmanship in all these areas. Participation of both Wellant students was supported by VHG, Dutch industry association for Gardeners, Landscapers and Urban Greeners.
